"Recruitment"
Burnage First Responders are looking for new members to join our Team. We need both operational and support members to help us provide our valuable service within the community!
-
OPERATIONAL MEMBER: If you are applying to be an operational NWAS CFR member of the Team, we will train you in aspects such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and the administration of oxygen, as well as the record keeping requirements of NWAS such as correct completion of NWAS patient report forms. There is also the opportunity to develop into the ECFR role (subject to funding and a minimum of 12 months as a CFR), which gives you more skills and the ability to attend more incidents. You will have to complete the NWAS recruitment process for the role, which includes the completion of a NWAS application form (providing at least two referees), the submission of a DBS check (formerly CRB check) as the position is exempt from the Rehabillitation of Offenders Act, and an interview. As Burnage First Responders, all we ask is that you agree to attend a set number of training sessions as well as agreeing a level of on-call availability - after all we're here to support the community and their needs are round-the-clock! In the future, it may also form part of your role to attend a minimum number of fund-raising activities as we receive no funding from NWAS.
-
SUPPORT MEMBER: If you are applying to be a support member of the Team, we would love to hear from you if you have administrative, fundraising, accounting, ICT and other skills! Like all operational organisations we are nothing without the help and support of our "back of house" function. Without you, the operational team could not do what they do! We will work with you to develop you into your role and opportunities to learn how to save a life and other training is also open to you! We would expect support members to also agree to attending a minimum number of fund-raising activities.
We also offer a comprehensive Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programmed within the NWAS Greater Manchester Area which is a rolling programme on various evenings and weekends throughout the year. Previous topics have included trauma management, basic pharmacology and basic ECG recognition. If you have any questions, or wish to apply, please get in touch using the form on the About Us page!

"Skillset"
In order to provide the best service to our community, Burnage First Responders are delighted that we have a varied skillset across our Team. We have two members qualified as ECFRs (see below) and two members classified as NWAS "Staff Responders" - one, an emergency medical technician 1, and the other a paramedic, both of whom work for NWAS. We believe that having this blended skillset allows us to better support and develop ourselves and therefore better support any incident which we attend. If you are interested in joining the Team, please see the above!

"Airwave Deployment"
Burnage First Responders are now deployed to incidents by the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) using the new Airwave pager system. These devices have the same functionality as the ambulance service radios, including tracking our location when we're signed on, allowing us to be sent to incidents within a three mile radius of where we are. This will help us to provide a better service to our community as previously we may have not been sent to incidents as the control room didn't know where we were. NWAS was the first ambulance service in the country to pilot these new devices and they are now working well. We would like to ensure all Team members have one each, but this is costly as there are subscription costs to be paid. If you could help by sponsoring a pager please get in touch!

"ECFR"
Burnage First Responders are proud to have TWO of our members sitting their final ECFR exams this weekend! Achievement of this extra qualification will allow them to respond to a wider range of emergency calls, providing enhanced care and undertake a more thorough assessment of our patients, therefore resulting in better patient outcomes. This is both testament to the commitment we have placed on our community, as well as the commitment to ongoing development of First Responders by North West Ambulance Service (NWAS). In addition to standard First Responder equipment, ECFRs carry extra observations kit - blood pressure cuff, thermometer and blood glucose testing kit - and some drugs, including entonox and Hypostop.

"Cardiac Smart"
Burnage First Responers have become the FIRST First Responder Team in Greater Manchester to not only achieve a Cardiac Smart award, but also went straight in at GOLD standard, the highest level offered. This award from the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) reinforces and cements our commitment to supporting and developing the communities around Burnage. Details of the Cardiac Smart scheme and awarding levels can be found here.

"Wilmslow Show"
Burnage First Responders were out in force to support this year's Wilmslow Show. We joined partners from across Cheshire and basked in the glorious weather. We also joined up with some of our other teams from across Greater Manchester, including Sale and Radcliffe, as well as our colleagues from the Wilmslow First Responder Team, the British Heart Foundation and North West Ambulance Service (NWAS). We demonstrated vital, life-saving skills to hundreds of people, as well as promoting healthy living.
